CNU dedicates Teacher Education Program and establishes
scholarship to honor Mary V. Bicouvaris

IThe Christopher Newport University Teacher Education Program was dedicated to Mary V. Bicouvaris, on May 9, 2002. Dr. Bicouvaris, a native of Greece, taught in Hampton public schools for 27 years, first at Jefferson Davis Junior High School and then at Bethel High School. In 1989, while at Bethel, she was named National Teacher of the Year. In 1991 she went to teach at Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News. Dr. Bicouvaris served on the CNU Board of Visitors from July 1989 until June 1995. She joined the CNU education faculty in 1995, teaching there until she lost her battle with cancer last year.

The Mary V. Bicouvaris Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established at CNU by friends and colleagues to honor her memory and in recognition of her dedication to the teaching profession. The scholarship will be awarded by the education department to a student who has been accepted into the Mary V. Bicouvaris Teacher Education Program and who has a 3.0 overall GPA and a demonstrated financial need.

Christopher Newport University has a long tradition of preparing excellent teachers. The Mary V. Bicouvaris Teacher Education Program at Christopher Newport University takes pride in preparing teachers who will be the leaders in the classrooms of tomorrow. Approximately 200 students are enrolled in the 4-semester CNU teacher education program, preparing for teaching careers in elementary, middle or secondary schools. An accelerated program is provided for high-ability career-switchers and a vibrant Master of Arts in Teaching program is offered to post-baccalaureate students wanting a teaching license or already licensed teachers wanting advanced graduate studies.

The Mary V. Bicouvaris Teacher Education Program at CNU is a mutual tribute to a renowned educator and an esteemed teacher education program.
