The Christopher Newport University Alumni Society will host its second
annual 5K race on Saturday, September 7, 2002 to raise money for student
scholarships.
The Peninsula Track Club is a co-sponsor of the race. They describe
the course as “a flat, fast run through the beautiful Riverside
community of Newport News.” Beginning and ending at the Freeman
Center on CNU’s campus, the course runs down Shoe Lane, onto Country
Club Road, turns down Central Parkway, along Riverside Drive, then looping
back toward the CNU campus.
Awards will be made to the overall top three male and female finishers
and to the top finishers in 11 age categories.
The 5K race is a fundraising event for the CNU Alumni Society’s
major project – student scholarships. The Society hopes to attract
both avid runners and people who want to help the Society endow seven
$1,000 student scholarships. “Proceeds from the 5K race will be
used to support the Alumni Society Scholarships,” said society
member Darry Patterson. “The success of this race will help our
long-range goal of fully endowing each of these scholarships.”
CNU alumna Kelly Peck is the race organizer again this year. A branch
manager of Harbor Bank, she is working hard to make this race even more
successful. “Last year the race raised $4,000 for scholarships.
We’re hoping to do even better this year,“ Peck said.
Interested runners can sign up for the race in advance by picking up
a form at the Freeman Center or through the Peninsula Track Club. Runners
may also sign up on race day in the Freeman Center starting at 7:30
a.m. The race will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 7th. The entry
fee is $15 if you register before August 28th and $18 after that date.
