The Christopher Newport University and Newport News Police Departments recently received $5,000 in grant money from the Department of Criminal Justice Services for auto theft prevention. The award was designed to help multi-jurisdictional partnerships purchase needed equipment or other support services related to crime prevention, law enforcement, and community policing.

A portion of the grant money provided a new Trek police bike for the CNUPD. The bike was needed for the department's bike patrol program. All CNU police personnel are required to be certified bike officers. This bike program teaches the 14 CNU officers how to respond to various situations on campus. Incidents are few, according to Chief Jeffrey Brown, but the department must be prepared to face problems when they occur. The bikes enable officers to get to scenes faster and easier, rather than by car or foot.

"The University Police enjoy a cooperative relationship with the City of Newport News Police Department. We have aligned our resources again to target problems in our community. This grant award will enable police officers from both jurisdictions to work together to inform citizens about the problem of auto theft and to encourage the use of techniques to prevent the theft of vehicles," said CNU Police Chief Jeffrey Brown.
