(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) - Thomas C. Schievelbein, president, Northrop Grumman Newport News, will deliver the keynote address for CNU’s 73rd commencement ceremony on December 14 at 10:00 a.m. in The Freeman Center.
A native of Montana, Schievelbein received a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a master’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of Virginia.

As president of Virginia’s largest private employer, Schievelbein has responsibilities for the design, construction and maintenance of the most sophisticated ships in the world – nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines. His responsibilities include the Virginia-class submarine program; the aircraft carrier programs for CVN 76 (Ronald Reagan) and the as-yet unnamed CVN 77 and CVNX; aircraft carrier overhaul and refueling; submarine fleet maintenance; commercial and naval ship repair; and business and technology development. Northrop Grumman Newport News employs approximately 18,000 people.

Schievelbein began his career at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1987 after 12 years with General Electric Company. At Newport News, he has served as vice president for Human Resources and Administration; vice president of Strategy and Naval Program Development and vice president for Naval Marketing. He was chief operating officer prior to his appointment as president in 2001 after Newport News Shipbuilding joined Northrop Grumman Corporation, an $18 billion, global defense company.

Schievelbein is active in the shipbuilding industry community and the Hampton Roads area. He serves on the board of directors for the American Shipbuilding Association and the Naval Submarine League. He also serves on the board of trustees for the Mariners’ Museum, the Dolphin Scholarship Fund and is a founding member of the Virginia Career Education Foundation.

Paul Trible, president of Christopher Newport University said, “Tom has demonstrated tremendous leadership in his first year as president of Northrop Grumman Newport News. With his guidance, Northrop Grumman Newport News has enhanced its critical role in our community and our nation. He exemplifies the qualities of excellence and accomplishment that we hope all of our graduates will aspire to emulate.”
