Retirement does not necessarily mean boredom. The LifeLong Learning
Society (LLS) at Christopher Newport University offers a varied educational
program for its members that both challenges and stimulates them. For
example, the Deputy Secretary of Commerce and Trade and the Poet Laureate
of Virginia are two of the speakers for this spring's Monday afternoon
lecture series.
The LifeLong Learning Society is made up of retirement age people who
have a passion for learning. There are no educational requirements;
one only needs intellectual curiosity. There are no exams and no grades,
but there is great fellowship in a stimulating environment of courses,
lectures, concerts and field trips.
The Spring Semester begins on January 27th with an opening lecture by Matt Erskine, Virginia's Deputy Secretary of Commerce and Trade.
He will talk about the Economic Development Plan for Virginia.
Virginia's Poet Laureate, Dr. George Garrett, will be a guest lecturer and will also bring several young, gifted poets who will also read as part of the program on March 31st. Garrett will also hold a master class for poetry students. Other lecture topics include "Early Peninsula Aviation Mishaps and Milestones", "American and Russian Intelligence: Partners or Competitors?" and "The History and People of Mulberry Island."
Mondays will also feature three concerts for LLS members by the CNU Music Department and Dr. Mark Reimer.
The LifeLong Learning Society is offering 41 five-week courses, which meet once or twice a week. The courses include "Introduction to Computers," "Using E-mail and the Internet," and "Learning to Use Microsoft Word."
If you're artistic, you'll want to check out "Watercolor Painting" and "Creations in Clay."
History buffs will be interested in "Pearl Harbor Attack Connections," "Daily Life in Ancient Rome," "Civil War at Sea" and "World War II & The Cold War."
Other classes include "Aerobics," "Approaches to Better Health," "Basic Geology," and "Diversity of Faiths."
The LifeLong Learning Society also offers an outstanding series of trips.
In April, there's a 4-day, 3-night, trip to Gettysburg with John Quarstein,
the Director of the Virginia War Museum. In addition to spending two
days exploring the Pennsylvania battlefield, members will also visit
Harper's Ferry and the Antietam Battlefield.
There is also a trip to the Valentine Museum, Wilton House and the Hotel
Jefferson in Richmond on March 4th.
On April 14th, members will visit the Thomas Gainsborough Exhibit at
the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Finally, there is a trip
to see "2 Pianos, 4 Hands" at the Wells Theatre.
Full membership for the 2003 spring and summer sessions is $100. This
includes Monday afternoon lectures and concerts; spring and summer courses;
and the opportunity to participate in optional activities ¬ such as
field trips ¬ by paying the activity fee. An associate membership costs
$55 and includes the Monday lectures and optional activities, but no
courses. To request a catalog or for more information, call the LifeLong
Learning Society at 594-7568 or visit their web site at http://users.cnu.edu/~lls.
