In a Christopher Newport University collaboration, the CNU Theater
and the Department of Music will perform Steven Sondheim’s musical
comedy, Company, in Gaines Theatre from Feb. 21-23, 28 and March 2.
The clashing sounds and pulsing rhythms of New York underscore this
landmark musical considered by many to have inaugurated the modern era
of musical theater. An honest, witty, sophisticated look at relationships,
Company offers a fresh perspective on our most cherished institution,
marriage – its troubles and triumphs, its viciousness and victories.
The music & lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim and the book is by George
Furth.
Set firmly in, and often about, New York, Company follows five married,
once married, or soon to be married couples and their mutual friend,
Robert, a 35-year-old bachelor who has been unable to connect in a long-term
relationship. The relationships are presented in a series of vignettes,
through Bobby's eyes, so that we see the less than ideal aspects of
commitment. However, it is obvious to the audience that the committed
are happy. Eventually, Bobby learns that while relationships aren't
perfect, they are a necessary part of "being alive." The play
includes the songs "Getting Married Today," "The Ladies
Who Lunch," and "Being Alive."
Admission prices are $10 for general admission; $8 for senior citizens and CNU faculty and staff; and free for CNU students with a valid ID. The Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m. and the Sunday shows begin at 2:30 p.m. The production length is 2 hours and 30 minutes. For more information, please call the theatre box office at (757) 594-8752.
