(NEWPORT NEWS, VA)—Retirement does not necessarily mean boredom for local senior citizens. The LifeLong Learning Society (LLS) at Christopher Newport University, an affiliate of the Elderhostel Institute Network, offers a Summer Program chock-full of learning opportunities to sharpen the sharpest of minds.

The 2003 LLS three-week summer program opens Monday, June 9 at 1:30 p.m. with a reception and lecture entitled “China’s Emerging Economy” conducted by CNU Professor Emeritus Marshall Booker. The Summer Program includes 18 courses ranging from “Beginning Computer” to “Cooking School” “Philosophy and the Golden Rule” to “Fly-Fishing.” The Society conducts a variety of field trips including: walking tours of Fort Monroe with renown local Historian John Quarstein, administrator of Historic Services at the Virginia War Museum; and a tour of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens which includes an “American Rover” cruise on board the tall ship.

Additionally, the LLS along with Elderhostel, has developed a special 5-night/6-day charter program at Peabody Institute, located in the heart of Baltimore. Academic courses, taught by experts, include “Listening to Jazz,” “Cole Porter” and “Great Piano Concerts.”

The LifeLong Learning Society is made up of retirement age people who have a passion for learning. There are no educational requirements; only intellectual curiosity. There are no exams and no grades; only great fellowship in a stimulating environment of courses, lectures, concerts and field trips.

The associate member summer fee is $40. The 2003 summer membership and course fee is $65 for persons not currently LLS members.
