Dr.
Timothy Eichenbrenner (’74) was named the winner of this year’s
Christopher Newport University Distinguished Alumni Award. Eichenbrenner,
a pediatrician practicing in Charlotte, North Carolina, will receive
the highest honor of the CNU Alumni Society at the group’s end-of-the-year
event on June 14th.
“I am pleased and honored to receive this very special award.
When I attended CNU, it was a college in its infancy. Even back then,
students had a great relationship with their professors; and we received
as much individual attention as we needed. It was, and is, a very special
place,” Eichenbrenner said.
A Hampton native, Eichenbrenner graduated from CNU with a Bachelor of
Science degree in Biology in 1974. He went on to receive a Master of
Science Degree from Western Kentucky and a Medical Doctoral Degree from
Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1979.
He established an Endowed Political Science Scholarship at CNU to honor
the memory of his son Brian, who was killed in an accident in 1997 at
the age of 18. The first Brian Eichenbrenner Scholarship was awarded
this year.
Dr. Eichenbrenner served on the National Board of Medical Examiners
in 1980 and on the American Board of Pediatrics in 1984. He is a member
of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the North Carolina Pediatric
Society and the Mecklenburg County Medical Society.
He was appointed to Chief of the Department of Pediatrics for the Carolinas
Medical Center from 1989 – 1990. In 1995, he was appointed Chairman
of the Department of Pediatrics for Presbyterian Hospital, where he
served until 1997. Currently, he is in private practice in Charlotte,
North Carolina.
The annual award is given to graduates of CNU who have distinguished
themselves in their professional life or in their service to the community.
Recent recipients include Douglas Duncan, CEO of FedEx Freight, and
James Haggard, Partner and CPA with Goodman and Company of Newport News.
