(NEWPORT
NEWS,VA) – It pays to be a Christopher Newport University sports
fan. If you’ve attended a CNU basketball or football game, you’re
familiar with the 50/50 raffle held by the CNU Alumni Society. Tickets
are a dollar each and the person with the winning ticket wins half of
the pot. The other half is split between scholarship funds and the athletics
department.
Once again, the raffle proved successful. Last year, $3,831 was raised.
This year, the Alumni Society almost doubled that number with $6,244:
$1,200 to athletics and $5,044 to scholarships. Karen Hokansson, coordinator
of the raffles, felt it was a success due in part to the “outstanding
support from CNU fans.”
The Alumni Society offers seven $1000 scholarships to CNU students
each year. In addition to the 50/50 raffle, the Alumni Society hosts
an annual 5k run and a Silent Auction to raise scholarship support.
