(NEWPORT
NEWS, VA)—Wylie C. Kirkpatrick of Newport News, Virginia, recently
provided funds to establish at his death the Rebecca Kite Endowed Scholarship
at Christopher Newport University (CNU) in memory of his wife. The purpose
of the fund is to provide scholarship assistance for undergraduate students
at CNU, a public comprehensive liberal arts university in Newport News.
The criteria for the selection of the Rebecca Kite Scholar provide that
the student be full-time, have demonstrated financial need and qualify
as a merit scholar. Preference will be given to a student from Madison
or Albemarle Counties, Virginia.
Mr. Kirkpatrick met his wife Rebecca, a native of Madison County, in
the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia when he worked for a plant that manufactured
penicillin in Elkton.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Kirkpatrick were active members of CNU’s LifeLong
Learning Society, a group of over 600 retired individuals. Mrs. Kirkpatrick
died in 2002 and Mr. Kirkpatrick continues to be actively involved,
currently serving on the Society’s board of directors.
