(NEWPORT NEWS, VA)—It’s never too late to learn. Travel, paint, surf the web, get in shape or immerse yourself in the classics with the LifeLong Learning Society at Christopher Newport University. The LifeLong Learning Society is made up of retirement age people who have a passion for learning. Intellectual curiosity is the only education requirement–no exams or grades–just great fellowship in a stimulating environment of courses, lectures, concerts and field trips.

The LifeLong Learning Society kicks off their Fall 2003 program on Monday, September 8th with a lecture from Senator Paul Trible, CNU President. Additional Monday afternoon lectures and concerts include a “Wrap-up of Virginia’s General Assembly 2003 Session,” presented by Senator Frederick M. Quayle; CNU in Concert led by Dr. Mark Reimer; and “Bean by Bean: A Sack Full of Humor,” by well-known Norfolk humorist Hope Milahap.
The LifeLong Learning Society’s Fall Program offers 40 five-week and two 10-week courses that meet either once or twice per week. The courses include practical topics such as “Introduction to Computers,” “Writing Fundamentals,” and “Conversational Spanish.”

Unleash your creativity with “Exploring Poetry,” “Creations in Clay,” “Watercolor Painting,” and “Creative Non-Fiction Writing.”
History buffs will be interested in “The Treasures of Italy and Darlings of the World,” “Rome Against Carthage: The Punic Wars,” “1421: The Year China Discovered America,” and “The Modern German State-from its Unification in 1871.”

Other classes include “Aerobics,” “The Hubble Space Telescope,” “NASA’s Future of Flight,” “Photographing the Bay and its Environs,” and “Recent Advances in Surgery.”
Can’t decide? Check out “Meanderings,” a weekly field trip to new museum exhibits and other interesting attractions in the area.

The LifeLong Learning Society also offers an outstanding series of trips. On September 12th tour some of Virginia’s loveliest plantations along Route 5, concluding with a wine tasting at the Williamsburg Winery. Travel to Jamestown on October 6th and learn about the archeological discoveries on Jamestown Island and how they will shape Jamestown’s future. October 13th-16th, just in time for beautiful fall foliage, LLS offers a 4-day, 3-night, trip to historic Bucks County, PA. Additionally, join LLS on November 14th for a trip to the Hermitage Foundation Museum and Rowena’s in Norfolk.

Full membership for the 2003-04 academic year is $140. This includes Monday afternoon lectures and concerts; courses; and the opportunity to participate in optional activities – such as field trips – by paying the activity fee. An associate membership costs $75 and includes the Monday lectures and optional activities, but no courses.
