The Christopher Newport University Alumni Society will host its third
annual 5K race on Saturday, September 6, 2003 to raise money for scholarships.
Co-sponsored by the Oyster Pointer, the CNU Alumni Society/Oyster Pointer
5K Fall Classic will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The course is described by The Peninsula Track Club, a partner in the
race, as “a flat, fast run through the beautiful Riverside community
of Newport News.” Beginning and ending at the Freeman Center on
CNU’s campus, the course runs down Shoe Lane, onto Country Club
Road, turns down Central Parkway, along Riverside Drive, then loops
back toward the CNU campus.
Awards will be made to the overall top three male and female finishers,
and to the top finishers in 11 age categories. The race will be aired
live on the radio at WXGM AM/FM 99.1.
“Proceeds from the 5K race will be used to support the Alumni
Society Scholarships,” said society member Darry Patterson. “The
success of this race will help our long-range goal of fully endowing
each of these scholarships.” The Society hopes to attract both
avid runners and people who want to help the Society endow the seven
$1,000 scholarships sponsored by the Alumni Society.
CNU alumna Kelly Peck is the race organizer again this year. A branch
manager of Harbor Bank, she is working hard to make this race even more
successful. “Last year the race raised $6,500 for scholarships.
We’re hoping to do even better this year,“ Peck said.
Interested runners can sign up for the race in advance by downloading
a race registration form from http://explore.cnu.edu/alumnirelations/specialevents/alumnirun.html,
picking up a form at the Freeman Center, or through the Peninsula Track
Club. Runners may sign up on race day in the Freeman Center beginning
at 7:30 a.m. The entry fee is $15 if you register before August 27th
and $18 after that date.
