(NEWPORT NEWS, VA)— The first lecture in the Dean William Parks
Colloquia series for the 2003-2004 academic year will be given on Tuesday,
September 23, 2003, at 12:30 p.m. in the Falk Art Gallery in Gosnold
Hall on the Christopher Newport University (CNU) campus. Dr. Gwendolyn
Thornton, CNU Assistant Professor of Social Work, will speak on “Delinquency
Among Black Females: An Ecological Perspective.” A brief reception
will follow Dr. Thornton’s talk. There is no admission charge.
Dr. Thornton’s lecture is based on a study she undertook as a
part of her doctoral research. She received her Doctorate of Social
Work from Norfolk State University in May of this year. Her study examines
the influences of family characteristics and peer relationships on delinquency
among black females from diverse backgrounds. The results of her analysis
provide a foundation for social work practitioners, educators, juvenile
justice professionals, policymakers and other helping professionals
to better understand and to respond to factors contributing to this
delinquent behavior.
Dr. Thornton is a licensed Clinical Social Worker as well as teacher
of courses in social work theory and practice. She made professional
presentations to both academic and social services audiences. She received
her Bachelor and Master of Social Work degrees from Virginia Commonwealth
University. She is a past recipient of a Commonwealth Graduate Fellowship.
