Due to Hurricane Isabel, students at Christopher Newport University
(CNU) have missed five and one-half days of class – one full day
for each of the five days of the school week, plus an additional afternoon
and evening of Tuesday classes. “The magnitude of this shortfall
is too great to be ignored,” CNU Provost Dr. Richard Summerville
said.
After consultation with the President of the Faculty Senate and members
of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate, the following adjustments
to the academic calendar are effective immediately:
• Fall break will begin after the last class on October 11 and
will end at noon, Tuesday, October 14. Classes will resume at that time.
This action alone makes up the afternoon and evening of Tuesday classes
which were missed on September 16.
• Classes for the fall semester will be extended to include the
week of December 8-12, now scheduled for final examinations. This will
compensate for all of the other classes missed due to Hurricane Isabel.
• Final examinations are changed to the week of December 15-19,
with the order in which they occur preserved.
• Commencement is moved from Saturday, December 20, to 2:00 p.m.
Sunday, January 11 – the Sunday immediately preceding the beginning
of spring semester classes.
