(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) — Forty-seven new full-time faculty have joined CNU, increasing the university's number of faculty to 196. New faculty members from 32 states, Washington D.C., and five countries represent 155 degrees. New faculty hail from 89 respected universities such as Syracuse University, Rutgers University, Columbia University and Harvard University. Academic disciplines include biology, physics, history, chemistry, economics, mathematics and more. Thirty new faculty will expand the number of full-time faculty, minimize the use of adjunct faculty and reduce class size.

"This marks the greatest growth in Christopher Newport University's history," said President Paul Trible. "These women and men are here because their values closely coincide with our own. They bring outstanding academic credentials, valuable academic experiences and superb academic reputation. We will be richer because they have joined us."

One such new faculty member is Nathan Busch, assistant professor of government and public affairs and an expert in contemporary international affairs. Busch has recently written a book entitled No End In Sight: The Continuing Menace of Nuclear Proliferation.   Busch, who most recently served as a senior research associate and visiting assistant professor at the University of Georgia, was recently featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education

Also joining CNU this fall and heading up the University's first marching band is Brantley T. Douglas III, director of athletic bands. Douglas brings 20 years of band experience at the public school and university level, most recently as the former assistant director of bands at James Madison University. "Brantley Douglas has proven himself to be a masterful designer and teacher of marching bands," says Director of Music Mark Reimer. "He joins an incredible music faculty who are committed to bringing national prominence to the University."

President Trible has pledged to increase CNU's faculty by an additional 30 positions for the 2005-2006 academic year, bringing the administration's end goal of 250 instructional faculty members within reach.
