(NEWPORT
NEWS) - The Christopher Newport University Alumni Society honored senior faculty
member Dr. Harold Cones with the Distinguished Leadership and Service
Faculty Award during a ceremony Monday - marking the official
beginning to the 2004-2005 academic year.
"I have received awards from time to time, but this one is
indeed special to me because it comes from the alumni, the folks with
whom I have interacted throughout my teaching career," said Cones. "I
have honestly loved my many years at CNU and am warmed by the thought
that my efforts have been perceived by my past students as fruitful."
Cones joined the CNU faculty in 1968 as an instructor in biology,
and has been the chairman of the Department of Biology since 1980.
Cones is an environmental and educational consultant to The Mariner's
Museum, serves on the National Advisory Board for Resources in Science
Education; the Lower Bay Advisory Council for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation;
and as a commissioner and chairman of the City of Newport News Wetlands
Board. Cones also serves as a commissioner on the Newport News Environmental
Commission and the Newport News Public Works Commission. He has published
six books, including Mariners' Museum Park, the Making of an Urban
Oasis, and countless professional and educational publications.
Among his numerous university achievements, Cones is the founding
father of the CNU Faculty Senate and the CNU graduate program - credited
with teaching the first University graduate course at CNU, the recipient
of seven teaching awards and three grants totaling nearly $1 million.
The CNU Alumni Society established the Distinguished Leadership and
Service Faculty award in 2002 to be given to a CNU faculty member whose
exceptional leadership and service in the CNU community exceeds all
usual expectations.
Christopher Newport University is a four-year public university
in Newport News, Virginia. CNU enrolls nearly 4,800 students through
its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Business.
