NEWS) — Christopher Newport University announces speakers for the Fall
2004 Diversity Scholars Series, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural
Affairs.
Dr. Jeffrey Milem of the University of Maryland will discuss Why
Race Matters: Lessons Learned from the Attack on Affirmative Action ,
on Thursday, September 23 at 7 p.m. in Anderson Auditorium in the
Administration Building on the campus of CNU. Milem is the a research
coordinator for the Diverse Democracy Project, which studies the
ways in which students' experiences with diversity while in college
prepare them to participate as citizens in a diverse democracy.
Mr. Walter Tejada, chairman of the Latino Advisory Commission,
will explore Latinos: The Commonwealth's Growing Community on
Thursday, October 21 at 7 p.m. in room 150 in the Student Center. The
newly established Commission will advise Virginia Governor Mark Warner
on economic, professional, cultural, educational, and governmental
links between the Commonwealth, the Latino community and Latin America.
Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner, one of the first women to receive
a doctorate for work in women's studies and a founder of one of the
country's first women's studies programs, will address Leading the
Way: The Untold Story of the Iroquois Influence on Early Women's Rights on
Tuesday, November 2 at 7 p.m. in room 150 in the Student Center.
The mission of the Office of Multicultural Affairs is to promote multicultural
education and enhance campus life through student outreach, cultural
celebrations and educational programming. It encourages a broader understanding
of multiculturalism: a philosophy that acknowledges, accepts and promotes
the perspectives and achievements of all people. Understanding and
respecting others are two key components of a multicultural campus
