Virginia State Senator John H. Chichester to Deliver Winter Commencement Address at Christopher Newport University

Professor Busch(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) — Senator John H. Chichester, president pro tempore of the Virginia Senate and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee will be the speaker at Winter Commencement on December 18th at Christopher Newport University. Nearly 300 students will receive their diplomas during the ceremony which will begin at 10 a.m. in The Freeman Center.

"Senator Chichester has a long and distinguished record of service to the citizens of the Commonwealth," said CNU President Paul S. Trible, Jr. "He is a champion of higher education and a good friend to Christopher Newport University.   His life models the qualities of the mind and heart that we want all CNU graduates to possess and take into the world and we are pleased that he will join us on this special day."

Elected to the Virginia Senate in 1978, Sen. Chichester represents the 28th Senatorial District. He is the longest-serving Republican in the Senate and the senior member of his party.

Sen. Chichester is Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Finance Committee's Education Subcommittee. He serves on the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission, the Council on Virginia's Future, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the Advisory Committee of the Virginia Institute of Government, and the Board of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. He is Chairman of the Joint Subcommittee on Administrative and Financial Relationships Between the Commonwealth and Higher Education and also serves on the Joint Subcommittee Studying Public Funding of Higher Education in Virginia.   He and his wife, Karen, currently reside in Reedville.
