(NEWPORT NEWS, VA)– Five Christopher Newport University students will study abroad at the International James Joyce Summer School at University College in Dublin, Ireland from July 2-16, 2005. The students will travel with Associate Professor Dr. Tracey Schwarze. Schwarze has been invited to lecture at the school and will join esteemed colleagues from American universities such as Notre Dame and Boston University, as well as numerous prestigious international universities and institutions.

Schwarze has researched and written extensively about James Joyce, and is a member of the International James Joyce Foundation. She is director of the Alice Randall Writing Center and President of the CNU Faculty Senate.

The students, armed with a wealth of knowledge from Schwarze’s seminar “James Joyce Major Authors,” will gain further insight into Joyce’s genius and the opportunity to discuss it in-depth. Two students received honors summer stipends for the program. Megan Tucker of Parksley, Va., received a $1,000 stipend and is creating a photo documentary of Leopold Bloom’s travels around Dublin in 1904. Kristen Willett of Salem, Va., also received a $1,000 stipend, and a $750 grant for research into the role women played in the Irish Independence movement.

Other students attending the James Joyce seminar include Mark Pangilinan and Justin Pritchett of Springfield, Va. and Brian Wrestler of Chesapeake.

The James Joyce Summer School was established in 1988 and is one of the most prominent events on the Joycean calendar. This event is held annually for two weeks in Newman House, St Stephen's Green, where Joyce attended school, and consists of lectures and week-long seminars. Just over 50 students are enrolled in the program, allowing for an intimate learning atmosphere while pondering the influence that Joyce has on modern-day literature.
