(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) — Get your mind in tune with your body, learn
more about computers, dabble in a foreign language, unleash your creative
energies, immerse yourself in history AND cruise the Caribbean with
the LifeLong Learning Society (LLS) at Christopher Newport University.
CNU’s President and former U.S. Senator Paul S. Trible will present
the opening lecture on Wednesday, August 31, 2005, at 2:30 p.m. in the
Ferguson Center for the Arts Music and Theatre Hall. A new member orientation
will begin at 12:45 p.m., followed by a reception at 1:30 p.m., also
in the Music and Theatre Hall.
The fall 2005 program provides a variety of courses for people of retirement
age who have a passion for learning. The program includes 41 five-week
courses that will meet either once or twice per week as well as six
Monday afternoon lectures and two concerts. Topics range from Celebrating
Mozart’s 250th Birthday to When Women Ruled the World.
Through a plethora of activities – including lectures, courses,
study and discussion groups, lunches, dinners and field trips to places
such as Tangier Island, the Shenandoah Valley and Cape Cod – persons
of diverse backgrounds come together to share a common interest in learning.
There are no exams or grades in the courses, although some courses include
assigned readings and the possible purchase of a text.
Intellectual curiosity is the only admission requirement. Managed by
and for its member, the LLS is a program of CNU's Office of University
Advancement and is an affiliate of the Elderhostel Institute Network.
The LifeLong Learning Society is able to share its program with the
community by participating in joint learning efforts with other educational
and research institutions, retirement groups, industries and museums
and by co-sponsoring three annual conferences.
Full membership is $165. This includes Monday afternoon lectures and
concerts; fall, spring and summer courses; and the opportunity to participate
in optional activities and trips. For more information, contact the
LifeLong Learning Society at (757) 594-7568 or visit http://lifelonglearning.cnu.edu.
