(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) — The Christopher Newport University Alumni
Society will host the 5th Annual CNU Alumni Society/Oyster Pointer 5K
Fall Classic on September 17, 2005. Race proceeds benefit the endowment
of scholarships in memory of recent CNU student athletes Jonny Besecker
and Grace Lovegrove.
“The United Campus Ministries Student Leadership Council came
up with the idea to memorialize Grace and Jonny at this event,”
said Campus Minister Melanie Reuter. “They are also providing
volunteer staffing to the race so current students can get involved
and have an opportunity to remember their friends.”
The race starts and ends at the parking garage behind the Ferguson
Center for the Arts and winds through the Riverside community. Registration
begins at 6:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $15
if received by September 9 and $18 thereafter. The fee is $8 for military
and students.
Door prizes and awards for the top three male and female competitors
in the each of the 12 age groups will be awarded. Race Director Kelly
Peck, CNU alumna and vice president of Towne Bank, can be contacted
at (757) 249-7672 or by e-mail kellyndave2@verizon.net.
Lovegrove died on January 12, 2005, after going into cardiac arrest
during a training run with her CNU cross country teammates. Besecker,
a former member of the CNU track team, died in Belgium on February 28,
2005, as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. Both were outstanding
student athletes and well respected and loved within the CNU community.
