(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) — Christopher Newport University President Paul Trible has been elected to chair the Council of Presidents (COP) of Virginia’s public four-year colleges and universities and 23 community colleges.  The COP was established by Virginia’s higher education chief executive officers to discuss common problems and issues and work with the Governor and General Assembly to shape higher education policies and programs.

Trible, former United States Congressman and Senator, has served as President of CNU since January 1996.  During his tenure applications to CNU have exploded by over 400%, SAT scores have soared by 205 points, over $400 million of capital construction has been completed or is now underway and CNU has become a university of choice for high ability students from throughout Virginia.

Trible was a leader in championing approval by Virginia’s voters of the $1 billion bond referendum for capital construction and the enactment by the Governor and General Assembly of the Higher Education Financial and Administrative Operations Act which will give all public colleges and universities expanded powers to pursue excellence.

Trible earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Hampden-Sydney College and his law degree from Washington & Lee University. He served as Commonwealth’s Attorney of Essex County from 1974-1976, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1977 and to the U.S. Senate in 1983.
