(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) — Christopher Newport University’s Dr. Lisa Spiller has been chosen as the 2005 Outstanding Direct Marketing Educator.
Spiller, professor of marketing, earned the annual award because of her contributions to direct and interactive marketing through teaching and research. The award is given by the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
“I am elated,” Spiller said. “This is definitely a career high to receive recognition and an award that is at the top of your discipline.”
Spiller is the co-author of “Contemporary Direct Marketing,” a direct marketing textbook that has been adopted at 56 colleges and universities in 27 states. She credits the textbook as one of the major reasons that she received the award. Published by Prentice Hall in 2004, the book is being translated into Chinese. |
The foundation also recognized Spiller's role in creating an undergraduate program in direct/interactive marketing at CNU, which is one of the few schools across the nation that has such a program, she said. In addition, she lead the formation of a student direct-marketing association at CNU, and her students have been successful in regional and national marketing competitions and in obtaining career positions in direct marketing.
“Lisa Spiller is a once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon," wrote Dr. Stephanie Bardwell, chair of the Department of Management and Marketing at CNU, in supporting Spiller's nomination for the award. “She is a full professor of Marketing with over 20 years experience as a dedicated classroom instructor… She is motivated by a pedagogical love for her work and a belief that it is a valuable and important calling to be an educator,” she wrote.
Spiller plans to receive the award and $1,000 prize at the Direct Marketing Educators’ Conference luncheon Oct. 16 in Atlanta. As the award recipient, she will serve as the educational liaison to The Direct Marketing Educational Foundation Board of Trustees for a one-year term.
