(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) — Everyday people captured in their essence are being showcased in two exhibits in Christopher Newport University's Ferguson Center for the Arts. The exhibits of paintings by Ann Segaloff will be on display Oct. 14 to Nov. 11. “People: Doing Their Thing” will be displayed in the Falk Gallery. “The Artist’s Love Affair with Italy” will be housed in the Ferguson Center hall gallery.

“People: Doing Their Thing” is a collection of 25 - 27 acrylic paintings of people Segaloff has encountered in travels to Italy, Greece, Egypt and the Caribbean. She has captured them while they are engaging in normal activities such as working, playing and resting. The exhibit also includes paintings of her family members.

“Watching people working, playing, resting, just living their lives is such an inspiration and such an endless fountain of subject matter no matter where I go or what the mood,” Segaloff said.

“The Artist’s Love Affair with Italy” is a collection of about 22 paintings that highlight Segaloff’s sometimes month-long travels to Italy. She has visited Italy about 20 times in 20 years. This collection is from her most recent trip in which she painted in Tuscany and Venice, among other areas.

Segaloff spent most of her career in retail advertising and marketing, then after her retirement in the 1990s, she resumed painting and has studied under Betty Anglin, CNU’s director of Fine Arts.

"She has great integrity and work ethic, and really cares about her students,” Segaloff said of Anglin.

Segaloff said she appreciates hard work and the cost of education, and therefore has agreed to donate proceeds from the sale of her paintings to the Betty Anglin Freshman Scholarship Fund. The fund provides money for expensive art supplies such as canvases, paints and frames to one freshman each year.

The Falk Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. For additional information, please contact the Fine and Performing Arts department at (757) 594-7930.
