CNU hosts first Leaders in Ethics panel discussion

(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Smithfield Foods executives will lead a discussion on business ethics at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 14 in the Music and Theatre Hall of the Ferguson Center for the Arts at Christopher Newport University. The event is free and open to the public.

Participating in the first Leaders in Ethics panel, all of Smithfield Foods, will be:

  • Sherrie String, vice president of human resources and safety
  • Dennis Treacy, vice president of environmental, community and government affairs
  • Kenneth Sullivan, vice president of internal audit
  • Jennifer Walker, human resources representative and 2004 CNU graduate

The panel discussion is sponsored by the Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business at CNU, the CNU student chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management, and CNU President's Leadership Program.

About the panelists

Sherrie String participates on the Economic Advisory Committee and Workforce Development Committee for Isle of Wight County and the Economic Club of Hampton Roads. She is an active member of the National Society of Human Resource Management, and has worked in the field of human resources, health, safety and security since 1984 and served in multiple industries from manufacturing to health care.

Dennis Treacy has helped enhance Smithfield’s environmental policies and programs to become the meat industry’s leader in stewardship programs. He has more than 25 years of environmental experience. He has served as a member of more than a dozen statewide and national boards and commissions.

Kenneth Sullivan oversees Smithfield’s internal audit activities worldwide and is jointly responsible for administration of the company’s Code of Business Conduct. He is a certified public accountant and has experience across multiple industries, focusing on the effectiveness and efficiency of business processes and related internal controls. In addition to responsibility for the design and execution of Smithfield’s worldwide internal audit plan, Sullivan also spearheaded the company’s efforts to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Jennifer Walker participated in local Katrina Victims Career Fairs to help victims locate employment, and is a member of the Society for Human Resources Management. At CNU, she was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, The Professional Business Fraternity and was a founding member of the CNU Student chapter of SHRM. She has worked for Smithfield Foods since July 2004.
