Orson Scott Card to speak at 25th Annual Writers' Conference

(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Writers are invited to enter their unpublished manuscripts in Christopher Newport University’s writing contest held in conjunction with the 25th Annual Writers’ Conference, which is April 7-8, 2006, at the Ferguson Center for the Arts. The deadline for entering the contest in Jan. 31, 2006.

The keynote speaker for the conference is Orson Scott Card, an international best-selling author of science fiction novels “Ender's Game” and “Ender's Shadow.” He also has written plays, musical comedies, biblical novels, contemporary fantasies, medieval fantasy, commentaries and poetry. The conference includes workshops on writing for plays, picture books, poetry, short nonfiction, novels for young readers and more.

Contestants may enter one work in each of the four categories: poetry, fiction, juvenile fiction and nonfiction. First-place winners will receive $100 and an engraved silver bowl. Second-place winners will receive $50, and third-place winners will receive $30. Winning entries will be published in the 25th anniversary edition of the “Winning Entries Booklet.”

Writers must be registered for the conference in order to enter the contest. The Conference and Writing Contest registration fee is $75. For senior citizens (age 60 and older) the fee is $55, and it is $30 for students. For CNU students, there is no charge for the conference, but the optional lunch is $5. The writing contest fee for CNU students is $10.
