(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Christopher Newport University’s Model United Nations team won half of all the awards presented at the Pan American Model UN competition held in early November in Charleston, S.C. The 30 CNU students competed against students from Florida, West Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina in the Southeastern region.

The CNU team won more individual and team awards in this competition than any other event it has participated in, according to Erin Ireland, president of CNUMUN.

In the mock UN competition, each student simulated the role of the ambassador to the United Nations from all nations across the globe.

The two Most Distinguished Delegation awards were both given to CNU, represented by the following students: Mehreen Farooq, Braden Harrison, Bradley Carey and Nicole Justice. Winner of the Most Outstanding Delegate was Mehreen Farooq. Distinguished Delegate awards went to Nicole Justice, Larry Rotruck, Braden Harrison and Bradley Carey. First-place Outstanding Delegate was Adam Claar. Honorable mentions went to Simon Halpern and Thomas Welch. Six of the awards were earned by first-time Model UN participants.

The team is sponsored by the faculty of the CNU Department of Government and Public Affairs, headed by Professor Harry Greenlee. They were accompanied by Professor Gil Crippen and Dr. Brennan Kraxberger.
