(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — The Emmy-award winning filmmaker, director and producer Alex Gibney will speak at Christopher Newport University on Feb. 9 in the Music and Theatre Hall of the Ferguson Center for the Arts.

Gibney’s speech will follow the screening of his documentary film, “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” which uses Enron’s own company footage, television clips and interviews to provide an informative and entertaining perspective on the Enron scandal. The film premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters in spring 2005.

The film screening begins at 4 p.m., and Gibney will speak beginning at 6 p.m. A part of CNU’s Dean William Parks Colloquium, the film screening and speech are free and open to the public.

Gibney’s other credits include “The Trials of Henry Kissinger,” a worldwide theatrical release; the HBO documentary “Soldiers in the Army of God,” about the radical fringe of the anti-abortion movement; “Speak Truth To Power,” a PBS drama special about human rights activists scripted by Ariel Dorfman and starring Sigourney Weaver and Alec Baldwin; “Brooklyn Babylon,” a feature film directed by Marc Levin and featuring the Grammy Award-winning, hip hop group The Roots; and “The Huntress,” a TV movie that became a TV series and aired on the USA Network.

Gibney earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and attended UCLA Graduate School of Film and Television.
