(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Understanding the changes the Internet has brought to universities will be the focus of a presentation by professor and researcher Steve Jones at Christopher Newport University on March 16.

Jones, a professor of communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago and adjunct research professor in the Institute of Communications Research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will speak at 3 p.m. on March 16 in Gaines Theatre. His presentation “Pew Internet and American life Project: The Internet Goes to College – 2005 Update” is free and open to the public.

The Internet has completely changed the way colleges and universities are run, and it is used for virtually every different aspect of a college community, from student life, to the classroom, to the library and everything in between. Jones began working with the Internet in 1979 while at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his doctorate in communication from the Institute of Communications Research in 1987, and has published numerous books. His research interests encompass a broad range of topics from Internet technologies to audio technologies, Internet studies to popular music studies. Jones's interest in technology and policy have influenced in his research into popular music, youth culture and communication.
