CNU's President Trible selected as Bay Days Commodore
News Release - March 21, 2006 (NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Paul S. Trible Jr., president of Christopher Newport University, has been selected as the 2006 Commodore for the Hampton Bay Days festival in September. The 2006 Hampton Bay Days Board of Directors selected Trible because of his more than 30 years of public service, his dedication to Virginia and the Hampton Roads community, and his efforts to protect and enhance the Chesapeake Bay. “We couldn’t be happier to welcome Paul Trible into the Bay Days family. His commitment to public service and the Chesapeake Bay makes him a natural candidate for the Commodore’s position,” said Jack Pope, President of the Hampton Bay Days Board of Directors. “He has contributed endless hours of service to the Peninsula and its causes, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize him for his efforts.” Trible served as Commonwealth’s Attorney of Essex County from 1974 to 1976, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1977, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1982 and was a member of the United States Delegation to the United Nations. Trible was also recently selected as the Chairman of the Virginia Council of College Presidents. “I have spent most of my life in the Peninsula and Northern Neck of Virginia, and first fell in love with the Chesapeake Bay as a young boy fishing, crabbing and swimming in the Bay, and in our creeks and rivers,” said Trible. “As a Congressman and Senator, I fought for our watermen and fisheries, and for more federal and state monies to save the Bay. At CNU, my colleagues and I know that education is crucial to the survival of the Chesapeake Bay, and our faculty and students are actively engaged in important environmental activities.” The Hampton Bay Days festival is a three-day celebration designed to educate the public about the importance of the Chesapeake Bay while providing a day-long destination that’s fun and family-friendly. More than 250,000 are expected to attend the 24th Annual Hampton Bay Days Festival held Sept. 8 through Sept. 10, 2006, in downtown Hampton. Citizens can learn about conservation efforts through hands-on activities, sporting and water events, environmental education, children’s activities, live entertainment, fireworks, a juried art show and much more. In addition, the Virginia Air & Space Center will host The Hampton Bay Days Commodore’s Gala & Silent Auction, 7-10 p.m. on Sept. 6. The Commodore’s Gala is invitation only.
