(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Christopher Newport University students will present their original research at CNU’s Fifth Annual Paideia Student Research Conference on April 22 in Ratcliffe Hall on campus. The conference is free and open to the public.

The conference will open at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast and welcoming comments. The keynote speaker will be Dr. John A. Weinberg will speak at Regatta’s, the dining facility in the Student Union, beginning at 1 p.m. The conference ends about 5:30 p.m.

Student papers will cover a wide variety of topics and disciplines, including biology, psychology, history, government and business. A few of the 134 paper topics that will be presented are “Elie Wiesel’s Identity and the Holocaust,” Tracing the Literary Evolution of the Vampire,” and “Understanding the U.S. Demand for Oil.”

Paideia is a Greek word that emphasizes the educational ideal of liberal learning and the development of one’s intellectual, moral, and aesthetic talents. Inaugurated in 2001, Paideia is an annual conference at CNU dedicated to encouraging and showcasing the undergraduate and graduate student research in the liberal arts, sciences and professional studies.

The mission of the Undergraduate and Graduate Research Council, which sponsors the conference, is to promote a learning community in which faculty and students in various disciplines come together to share in research and scholarship activities. Members of the Council are committed to continuing student-faculty interaction and learning beyond the classroom and believe that students actively collaborating with faculty in the quest for knowledge represents the most powerful teaching a university can offer.

To this end, the UGRC is committed to enhancing and promoting student research, highlighting successful student-faculty research and scholarship, and making information about these successes available to the university and the larger community.
