(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Five students from the Master of Arts in Teaching program at Christopher Newport University were chosen to attend the Teachers of Promise Institute at James Madison University in spring 2006.

The Teachers of Promise Institute honors Virginia’s prospective teachers who have demonstrated professional commitment and achievement while in their respective teacher preparation programs.

Nicole Crayton, Elizabeth Guthrie, Kyle Lundsford, Steve Kleinow, Judith Hasty, and Jasmine Watts were chosen as CNU’s Teachers of Promise. The students from CNU were among students from the other 37 approved teacher preparation programs in the state of Virginia. All of the prospective teachers from CNU will graduate May 13 with a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree.

The Miliken Group and the Virginia Department of Education collaborated to host the conference on March 17 and 18 at James Madison University.

The two-day conference offered more than 20 professional development workshops to aid the nearly 200 prospective teachers in attendance.

“Be a different teacher at the end of your career than in the beginning,” said Philip Bigler, 1998 National Teacher of the Year, in his address to the participants.
