(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Two Christopher Newport University students in the Master of Arts in Teaching program received state awards for academic accomplishments.

Nicole Crayton received the Virginia State Reading Association scholarship of $500, which was awarded at the annual conference in March in Virginia Beach.

“I was very excited to receive one of the two Virginia State Reading Association scholarships that were awarded to graduate students,” Crayton said. “It is an honor to be a recipient of this scholarship, and it is an affirmation that attention to detail, hard work, and persistence are rewarded.”

Crayton is completing the last year of the five-year Master of Arts in Teaching program. She was an English major as an undergraduate, and now plans to teach early elementary grades.

Steve Kleinow was a recipient of the Virginia Association of Colleges for Teacher Education Student Award of $1,000, which also honors students for academic achievement in teacher education programs. Kleinow was honored at the spring meeting of the VACTE in April in Sweet Briar.

Kleinow came to CNU with a Bachelor of Science degree in aviation management and a graduate degree in aerospace administration. Previously an Air Force pilot, he plans to teach elementary school.

Crayton and Kleinow will graduate with master’s degrees at CNU’s Spring Commencement on May 13 and will begin teaching in August.
