(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — It has been determined by the Christopher Newport University Real Estate Foundation and Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company that the water damage to Madison Hall is so extensive that the building must be demolished and rebuilt.
Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company will pay for all costs of demolition, construction of a new Madison Hall and for outfitting the new building.
Demolition and construction of this new facility will commence as soon as possible. Our intention is to have Madison Hall ready for occupancy when students return to CNU for the fall semester in August 2007.
Madison Hall was struck by lightning on Aug. 4 and sustained damage from resulting fire, smoke and water damage. Tropical Storm Ernesto caused additional water damage, creating conditions such that mold is “growing exponentially,” according to the insurance company’s hygienist.
Christopher Newport University is a four-year public university in Newport News, Virginia. CNU enrolls 4,800 students in programs through its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Luter School of Business and offers great teaching, small classes and an emphasis on leadership, civic engagement and honor.
