(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Christopher Newport University’s chapter of the national sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha is hosting its annual Rock-A-Thon to raise money for the Newport News Special Olympics on Oct. 23 and 24 on the Great Lawn on campus.

Members of Alpha Sigma Alpha are seeking pledges for the 24 hours they will rock in rocking chairs, beginning at noon on Oct. 23. Bands will provide live music, and Newport News Special Olympians have been invited to appear as special guests.

Alpha Sigma Alpha members hope to raise $2,000 to help provide needed equipment, such as soccer balls, practice pennies, cones for drills and other soccer equipment, for the Newport News Special Olympics, said Alpha Sigma Alpha philanthropy chairman Erin McNaught.

The Special Olympics is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive, and respected members of society through sports training and competition.

The public is encouraged to stop by at any time during the Rock-A-Thon to donate, listen to great music, and meet the members of Alpha Sigma Alpha.

To donate to the Newport News Special Olympics, contact Erin McNaught at Erin.McNaught.04@cnu.edu.
