(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — The Center for Economic Education at Christopher Newport University has selected Newport News teacher Cheryl Wilkerson as its Outstanding Economic Educator of the Year.

Wilkerson, a 19-year veteran teacher who currently teaches first grade at Hidenwood Elementary, has been selected for this honor due to her unflagging enthusiasm and dedication to teaching economics.

According to the Center, Wilkerson has been an inspiration to her fellow teachers, embracing economic concepts and vocabulary and setting an example with her grasp of both. She is continuously teaching economic and financial literacy concepts to her students.

She will be presented with a $100 honorarium by the Virginia Council on Economic Education on Nov. 17 at the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank. The winners from the 10 Centers for Economic Education in the state will then vie for a grand prize of $1,000.
