(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — A graduate student in the Christopher Newport University Master of Arts in Teaching Program has received the Minority/Diversity Scholarship Award for 2006-2007 from the Virginia Association of Teachers of English.

Anita Love earned the award, which is given to outstanding minority candidates who plan to teach English Language Arts in elementary or secondary schools and who are members of the college student organization. Students are selected on the basis of academic merit and faculty recommendations.

Love, a native of Portsmouth, received her bachelor’s degree in social work from CNU in 2004 and intended to become a social worker.  But, she was hired as an SOL tutor and “fell in love with the students and the teaching profession,” she said. Love will graduate with a MAT degree in May 2007.  As part of her award, she has been invited to attend the VATE Fall Conference as a guest of the association.
