(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) — Dr. Arthur Gudikunst, associate professor of business for Christopher Newport University’s Joseph W. Luter, III School of Business, recently presented a talk on “Hedge Funds: Returns and Risks, the Reality and the Myths” to the Financial Planning Association of Hampton Roads.
“I have an affinity with this group, having worked in the investment management field of the insurance and mutual fund industries,” says Gudikunst, whose specialty is financial management and investments. “Hedge funds employ a wide variety of complex investment strategies that a typical mutual fund cannot duplicate. While hedge funds have been around for 20 years, they have been attracting more and more general investor interest. They are less regulated than mutual funds and are believed to be able to generate higher returns. However, they present greater risks and are appropriate only for more sophisticated investors with higher income and greater personal net worth than the average investor.”
Gudikunst graduated from Virginia Tech with an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering. He received his master’s degree and Ph.D. in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He joined CNU’s Accounting, Economics and Finance Department in 2003 after a 30-year career in both academia and the insurance industry in New England. He has taught at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass., and Bryant University in Rhode Island, both private business schools. He currently teaches financial management to CNU business school students as well as personal finance to non-business majors.Christopher Newport University is a four-year public university in Newport News, Virginia. CNU enrolls 4,800 students in programs through its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Luter School of Business and offers great teaching, small classes and an emphasis on leadership, civic engagement and honor.
