(Newport News , Va.) — Dr. Lisa Spiller, professor of marketing at Christopher Newport University’s Luter School of Business, was recognized as the first-ever recipient of the CNU Alumni Society Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring. The award was presented on May 12, 2007, by CNU President Paul Trible and Alumni Society President Mark Bernecker at the University’s Honors Convocation. Spiller also received a stipend as part of the award, which she plans to share with CNU students. “In grateful appreciation of this meaningful recognition and monetary award,” she says, “I am humbled and proud to donate a portion of it to our CNU student organizations.” The search for this year’s recipient was led by University Provost Dr. Richard M. Summerville with help from a faculty screening committee and an Alumni Society committee. Dr. Spiller was one of eight nominees for the award, all of whom were selected by their fellow faculty members. In 2005, Dr. Spiller was recognized as the nation’s Outstanding Direct Marketing Educator. She received both a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration from Gannon University, and earned a Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. The Alumni Society Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Mentoring will now be presented each year during commencement weekend at the University’s Honors Convocation, giving its recipients a competitive edge in the selection processes for statewide excellence in teaching awards.
