CNU Professor wins SCHEV grant award

(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - Dr. Rebecca Wheeler, Associate Professor of English at Christopher Newport University has won a SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) grant award for her project entitled “TELES: Technology Enhanced Learning of English and Science in middle school.” Dr. S. Raj Chaudhury, CNU Associate Professor of Physics and two CNU students will be joining Dr. Wheeler in this project, which will provide educational Physics and English professional development and research at a middle school on the Eastern shore of the Commonwealth.

“CNU Physicist Dr. S. Raj Chaudhury and I are glad to be partnering in this project to integrate and deepen English literacy and Science learning in a high poverty, rural middle school on Virginia 's Eastern Shore ,” said Dr. Rebecca Wheeler. “It will certainly be an exceptional experience for the two CNU students who will engage in educational research, analysis and writing with Dr. Chaudhury and me.”

This CNU project will receive an award of $93,564.00 under the federal Title II, Part A - Improving Teacher Quality State Grants of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) program. Through an open competition, SCHEV awarded 10 Teacher Quality grants for 2007-2008 in the state of Virginia . In reviewing CNU's grant proposal, the SCHEV review panel wrote to President Paul Trible that “You and your faculty are to be commended for the important work you are doing with the area public schools and the significant contribution you are making to increase student achievement.”
