CNU welcomes its Largest and Best Qualified freshman class

(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - Christopher Newport University President Paul Trible, along with hundreds of students and staff, today welcomed new CNU freshmen to campus. As freshmen arrived at CNU, President Trible was on hand to greet them and their parents, and to personally help them move in.

President Paul Trible“With an average GPA of 3.5 and an 1170 SAT, this freshman class is the strongest ever to enter CNU,” said President Trible. “I am very glad to welcome them to the CNU community as they begin their 2007-2008 academic year.”

This year’s freshman class at CNU is also the largest in the school’s history, at 1279. More than 7400 applications were received (also a record for CNU), with students applying from 44 different states. CNU received 5,270 applications from Virginia residents. Of those who applied, 49% were accepted.

 
200 students will participate in the President’s Leadership Program, and they have an average GPA of 3.7 and an average SAT score of 1249. Among these Leadership students are 62 Goodwin and Smithfield scholars who have earned an average GPA of 3.93 and a 1318 on the SAT. Ninety students plan to enroll in the Honors Program, and have an average GPA of 3.8 and an average SAT score of 1284. President Trible helps with move-in

 

One third of the freshman class hails from Northern Virginia, 15% are from Richmond, and 12% are from Hampton Roads. Seventy-nine percent of freshman applicants listed a Virginia locality as their hometown. The top­ten localities represented are Richmond, Newport News, Virginia Beach, Fredericksburg, Fairfax, Springfield, Chesapeake, Alexandria, Yorktown and Midlothian.
