(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - In the early morning hours of October 11, 2007, police officers on patrol heard a noise and saw smoke in the vicinity of York River East Residence Hall. Upon their arrival, the police officers were able to determine that the smoke had erupted from a plastic bottle that had been left on the sidewalk in front of the building. The Newport News Police and Fire Departments were requested to respond to the scene. Their investigation revealed that a small plastic bottle had been filled some type of oxidizing agent, such as a common household cleaner, and a chemical reaction had occurred causing the smoke.

Information from witnesses in the area indicated that this was an isolated event and the building was not evacuated. There were no injuries or property damage as a result of the incident.
