CNU Professor Named Elector for the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame

(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - Dr. James R. Hines, Professor of Music at Christopher Newport University,
has been named an elector for the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame. As such, he will vote on candidates nominated for inclusion in the Hall of Fame. His appointment to the position of an elector was made by the Board of Directors of the World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame. From the candidates nominated this year.  A maximum of four will be inducted at the U. S. Figure Skating Championships in St. Paul, Minnesota, in January.

“I am humbled by this honor,” said Dr. Hines.  “Wonderful people are involved in all aspects of figure skating, athletes as well as coaches, judges, officials, and leaders. They have given much and served unselfishly, and I have had the pleasure of meeting many of them. As an elector, I will have the honor of being part of their just recognition and continuing legacy.”

Dr. Hines, a former skater, is a skating historian. His book, “Figure Skating: A History,” published in January, 2006, by the University of Illinois Press, is widely recognized as the definitive history of the sport. Now in its second printing, it is the only exhaustive history of figure skating. Dr. Hines has also published several articles on the sport, most recently “The Birth of Winter Olympic Sports: London, 1908” published in the Journal of Olympic History.   

Candidates for the Hall of Fame are distinguished athletes and other individuals who have made significant contributions to figure skating. Current members of the Hall of Fame include such well-known skaters as Tenley Albright, Dick Button, Peggy Fleming, Scott Hamilton, Dorothy Hamill, Janet Lynn, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Paul Wylie.
