(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - Five Christopher Newport Geography students placed 2nd at the first Global Bee International Contest sponsored by Katie Helwig of the Sister Cities Commission of Newport News at the Point Plaza Hotel this weekend. CNU students Bill Paulis, Andrew Lunsford, Hillary MacSwain, Brad Kraft and Jacob Andy represented the university’s Department of Government and Political Affairs. They came in 2nd in the college and university category in a very close contest, tying with the Newport News teachers team at the end of the 10 rounds of competition. They were recognized for their depth of knowledge related to local affairs, the environment, foreign affairs, economics, breakthroughs in model day science, international sports, world political figures, people and places, international physical/cultural geography and modern world history and were sponsored by CNU faculty adjunct geography professor Gil Crippen. Eleven teams were represented in the contest which included local high schools, area universities and regional corporations.
