(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - The 8th Annual CNU Regional High School Mathematics Contest was held on Saturday, November 17th, 2007. The contest, which is sponsored by the Hampton Roads Center for the Teaching of Mathematics and the Department of Mathematics at CNU, brought more than 90 students from eleven high schools around Southeastern Virginia to the CNU campus. High schools represented at the contest were:

  • New Horizons Governor's School
  • Warwick High School
  • Ocean Lakes High School
  • Great Bridge High School
  • Heritage High School
  • York High School
  • Grafton High School
  • Poquoson High School
  • Denbigh Baptist Christian School
  • Cape Henry Collegiate School
  • Stonewall Jackson High School

This was the first year that Heritage High School, Poquoson High School, Cape Henry Collegiate School and Stonewall Jackson High School participated in the contest.

The contest itself consisted of two parts; an individual round and a team round. During the individual round, each competitor was given 60 minutes to answer 40 multiple choice questions. Questions covered a variety of topics (up through and including math analysis/trigonometry) and were of varying levels of difficulty. Each correct answer scored one point, and there were no penalties for incorrect responses. The team round consisted of 12 non-multiple choice questions. Each team was provided four minutes to come up with a solution to each problem, with a short break provided between questions. Each correct response to a team round question earned nine points. On the team side, the winning teams in each category were as follows:

Group AAA - New Horizons Governor's School (116 points): Andrew Tyler, Benno Lee, Prakriti Verma, Michael Andreano

Group AA - York High School (145 points): Alex Chen, Kevin Luo, Jennifer Lin, Juliana Wu

Independents - Cape Henry Collegiate School (96 points): Barrett Jacobson, Jimmy Bertolino, Jacob Green, Emily Burke

There were no entries from Group A schools this year. 2006 Group AAA Champion Ocean Lakes High School from Virginia Beach finished tied for second with a team from 2005 Group AAA Champion Warwick High School with a score of 115 points. This was the fourth time in five years that Ocean Lakes High School finished as runner-up in the Group AAA division. York High School has now won three consecutive Group AA Championships, and for the second year in a row produced the overall highest team score.

Ten individual awards were also presented. The top scorers in each grade were:

Freshman: Brian Li, Ocean Lakes High School William Luo, Grafton High School 15 correct responses

Sophomore: Zack Garcia, Ocean Lakes High School 23 correct reponses

Junior: Kevin Luo, York High School 23 correct responses

Senior: Alex Chen, York High School 33 correct responses

The final five awards were given to the students achieving the three highest scores on the individual round. These award recipients were:

Highest Score: Alex Chen

Second Highest Score: Kevin Luo and Zack Garcia

Third Highest Score: Virginia Lovell, Warwick High School and Prakriti Verma, New Horizons Governor's School

Each individual award recipient will receive a $50 prize. One of the monetary prizes was provided by the Peninsula Council of Teachers of Mathematics with the remaining prizes provided by the CNU Mathematics Department.
