“I’m truly honored to have been chosen as the new Dean of Students,” said Dr. Hughes. “CNU is an institution with exceptionally high standards, with a focus on continual growth and improvement, and a commitment to providing a first class educational experience for our students. I look forward to working closely with our students, my academic colleagues and other university administrators as we move to the next level in providing an elite residential liberal arts education that is the hallmark of Christopher Newport University.” Dr. Hughes initially served CNU as the Coordinator of Judicial Affairs in 2000, and most recently as the Director of the Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards (CHECS) for a number of years. He has enjoyed success in student affairs at a number of higher education institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University. In his new role as CNU’s Dean of Students, Dr. Hughes will oversee the educational experience of students outside of the classroom. He will work closely with Directors in Residential Life, Counseling, Student Activities, and CHECS, as well as additional staff in orientation and multicultural affairs to collaboratively provide a meaningful educational and social experience that focuses on student success. He will also focus on the honor development of all CNU students. Dr. Hughes earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership at the College of William and Mary.
