(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - Jane Ellen Glasser, the winner of the 2005 Tampa Review Prize for Poetry, will read from her poems at Christopher Newport University on Tuesday, February 5, 2:30 - 4:00 p. m. in the Washington Room of the David Student Union.  Copies of her prize-winning second book, Light Persists, will be on sale.  The program, sponsored by the English Department, is free and open to the public.

Prize Winning Poet Jane Ellen Glasser

Glasser’s poetry has appeared in numerous journals, including The Hudson Review, The Southern Review, The Virginia Quarterly Review, The Georgia Review, Poetry Northwest, and Connecticut Poetry Review.  Her first collection of poetry, Naming the Darkness, with an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W. D. Snodgrass, was issued by Road Publishers in 1991.  A poetry advocate, Glasser has reviewed poetry books for the Virginian-Pilot, edited poetry for Ghent Quarterly, and later co-founded the nonprofit arts organization and journal New Virginia Review. In addition, she has given presentations and conducted workshops for the International Society of Poetry, the Writing Project at the College of William & Mary, the Tidewater Writing Project at Old Dominion University, and the Florida’s First Coast Writer’s Festival, to name a few.

Glasser served as poet-in-the-schools and visiting poet throughout Virginia for several years before assuming a sixteen-year position as English and creative writing teacher at Norview High School in Norfolk. Now retired from daily teaching, she continues to encourage poetry writing through workshops and writing institutes sponsored by gifted and talented programs in the Norfolk Public School system.
