(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - Dr. Jack Caravelli, the former Director of Nonproliferation on the U.S. National Security Council will be coming to Christopher Newport University to deliver a lecture.  His lecture “Challenges for the Next Administration in the War on Terrorism” will be given tomorrow, Wednesday, February 13 at 5:30 p.m. in South Reading Room (on the second floor) of the Trible Library.  Following the lecture, he will be signing copies of his new book, Nuclear Insecurity: Understanding the Threat from Rogue Nations and Terrorists.  These books will be available for purchase at the lecture.

Dr. Caravelli is a leading expert on a range of national security issues, including terrorism and nuclear nonproliferation.  He began his governmental career in 1982, joining the Central Intelligence Agency where he served until 1996 in a variety of managerial, analytic and staff positions.  Dr. Caravelli in 1996 joined the White House National Security Council Staff as Director for Nonproliferation with responsibility for the formulation of the US Government’s nonproliferation policy to Russia and the Middle East.  In 2000 he became Deputy Assistant Secretary and Director at the Department of Energy’s international nuclear and radiological security programs.  Since leaving government service in 2005, Dr. Caravelli has served as a visiting professor at the UK Defence Academy and is on the advisory board of Oxford University’s Program on Intelligence and Terrorism.  He has been a featured commentator on security issues for CNN and the BBC.
