Dr. Jeffrey Bergner to Serve as Visiting Professor at CNU

I look forward to being a part of the University's growing role in Virginia and beyond.” In his current position, Dr. Bergner reports directly to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as her primary liaison with Congress on legislative and budget issues, and manages a staff of 70 at the Department of State. Previously, he founded the government relations firm of Bergner, Bockorny, Castagnetti, Hawkins & Brain, Inc., consulting for clients on international trade, finance, taxation, and political issues. Before founding this firm, he served as Staff Director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee under the Chairmanship of Senator Richard Lugar. Dr. Mark Padilla, the Provost at CNU states, “Dr. Bergner is a highly qualified academic who has led an impressive career at the highest levels of government, business and higher education, and we are delighted to have someone of his caliber with us at CNU next year. He will offer his academic knowledge, combined with real world experience, to our students in the classroom, and serve as a resource for our faculty in related subject areas. We are very happy to add him to our faculty.” Dr. Bergner will have an appointment in the Department of Leadership and American Studies, will lead a lecture/faculty development series, and will also serve as Senior Fellow with CNU's Center for American Studies and Civic Leadership, and will also teach courses for the Department of Government and Public Affairs. He received a B.A. degree from Carleton College , and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in politics and philosophy from Princeton University. He has taught at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan, and Georgetown University , where he served for 20 years as adjunct professor of Security Studies. He and his wife Susan will be moving to the Hampton Roads area in the near future. Christopher Newport University is a four-year public university in Newport News, Virginia.
