(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) - The Palace of Versailles! The Louvre Museum! The Castle of Vincennes! Touring these illustrious landmarks as well as celebrating Bastille Day were just a few of the unforgettable experiences had by fourteen CNU students during a fantastic, two-week Study Abroad session in France during July 2008. This international course opportunity entitled “Comparative Justice Seminar in Paris” offered three hours of credit for students, and was one of numerous courses offered in international locations this summer.

The Paris program combined classroom work with site visits to the French Parliament, the Supreme Court of France (the Cour de Cassation), and guest speakers from the National Police (Gendarmerie Nationale), and the French Prison System (Administration Penitentiare). Students met and interacted with a senior member of Parliament, a senior officer of the French elite counter-terrorism and hostage rescue unit, and toured the royal castles in Versailles and in the Loire Valley.

This seminar was sponsored by the Department of Government and the CNU Office of International Programs (OIP). This course is offered every summer by Professor Peter Carlson and has been previously hosted in England and Ireland. Dr. Carlson and Dr. Stephanie Bardwell will be offering this seminar during July 2009 in Spain. The course will be available for students within any major of any academic department across the university curriculum.

The Office of International Programs assists students in researching, planning and implementing study abroad as a part of their academic plan while at CNU. OIP serves as a clearinghouse to review and evaluate study abroad programs, to guide students in the application process, and to ensure that each participating student’s academic needs and goals are well served.
